Direct bookings with no commission: the three things you need

The commission is not the expensive part. What costs is not having the contact details of whoever booked, and fixing that takes three pieces that talk.

To take bookings without anybody keeping a share of the bill, you need three things, and they have to talk to each other: a page of your own that accepts the booking, a calendar that genuinely knows what is free, and somewhere that booking turns into a person with a name. Whoever has all three pays no commission for the simplest reason there is: there is nobody in the middle.

The hard part is not leaving a portal. It is having something that works on the Monday after, when the phone rings anyway and you are on the floor. This piece is about that.

The commission is visible. The real cost is not.

You read the commission on your statement and it hurts once a month. That is the easy part of the problem, because at least it is a number.

What you cannot see is that the person who booked is not yours. You do not have their email. You do not know it is their third visit. You do not know that last September they booked for eight and this year never showed up. And the day you decide to stop, you walk out with the keys and nothing else: your customer list stays where it was.

There is a worse case too, the one nobody talks about: the customer who was coming anyway. The one who walks past your place every day, who knows you, and who books from their phone with the app they already have. On that booking the middleman added nothing, and it costs you the same.

The three things you need

A page that accepts the booking. Not a form that emails you, not a big phone number in the middle of the screen: something where the person picks day, time and service, and ends up with a confirmation. If booking means writing to you and waiting for your reply, you do not have a booking system. You have an inbox.

A calendar that knows what is genuinely free. This is where almost everyone stops, and it is the piece that separates something that works from something that makes work for you. The calendar has to know how long each service takes, how many chairs or tables you have, and what is already taken. Otherwise you are just moving the double work somewhere else, and sooner or later you take two bookings for the same slot.

Somewhere the booking becomes a record. Name, contact, what they took, when they came. Without it you have solved the commission problem and kept the big one: you do not know who your customers are.

Three pieces, and that is why buying them separately rarely works: three subscriptions that do not talk leave you to be the bridge, by hand, every day.

The calculation worth doing, and you have to do it

We will not tell you how much you save, because we do not know: it depends on how many bookings come from there, how much someone arriving that way leaves on average, and how much is kept on top. Those are three numbers you have and we do not.

What we can do is give you somewhere to put them. On the pages for restaurants and for hair and beauty salons there is a calculator with exactly those three questions. You put your numbers in and see what comes out. The arithmetic is yours, and that is right: it is the only way the result is any use to you.

The cost of the other route is written down and does not move: it is a monthly subscription, the same whether you take ten bookings or a thousand.

What looks like a solution and is not

How to move without switching off what works

You do not have to close anything on day one, and we do not recommend it. Direct booking gets switched on alongside what you have, for as long as it takes to trust it.

The order that makes sense is this:

  1. Set up your own channel and send the people who already know you there: the ones who call, the ones who walk in, the ones who write.
  2. Watch for a month how many bookings arrive directly. Now you can see it, because you are counting them.
  3. Then decide what to do about the other channel, with a number in front of you instead of a feeling.

People who do it this way usually discover one thing: a big slice of what they were paying commission on was people they already had.

What to do this week

Not a project, an afternoon of checks:

  1. Open your site on your phone and try to book. Time it. If you are not done in thirty seconds, the person who does not know you has already closed it.
  2. Count how many of last month's bookings came from customers who were already yours. That is the number that decides everything else.
  3. Check whether you have the contact details of everyone who booked in the last six months. If you do not, that is the problem, not the percentage.

In short

The commission is the symptom. The problem is that the relationship with the customer lives at somebody else's house.

It is solved with three pieces that have to sit together: a place of your own where people book, a calendar that knows what is free, and a record that fills itself. We sell them together and we take no commission on any booking, ever. But the first thing to look at is not the price: it is how many of the customers you pay for as new were already yours.

If you are wondering what it costs to set up, we broke it down line by line: the three lines every quote is made of. And if the problem is even earlier, that nobody finds you: the three factors that decide whether you show up on Google.
